Lord Reith was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1873. He was educated at Edinburgh Academy, and then attended the University of Edinburgh, graduating in Modern Languages with a double first. He began his career in journalism on the Glasgow Evening News before joining the wireless service of the Marconi Company in 1899. After two years with Marconi he joined the staff of The Times newspaper in London, becoming assistant editor in 1910
At the beginning of World War I Lord Reith was recruited by Sir Edward Marsh to become Director General of the British Broadcasting Corporation. He was knighted for his efforts during the war and given the title of "Lord Reith".
